It is common to observe a few gas bubbles forming at the surface of the zinc when zinc is put into solutions containing copper (II) nitrate. This is in addition to the formation of a new solid on the zinc strip. The bubbling usually indicates that a reaction between the metal and an acid is occurring. Explain:
- how acid "gets into" the solutions without adding it directly and
- the formation of the bubbles.
Support your explanation with chemical equations.
