Imagine that you are in a contest where your team earns five points for making the best possible explanation for what you observe. In one task you have a sample of a single unknown substance in a closed metal box with a small hole in the lid. By sniffing at the hole, you can smell a musty odor in the box and the odor is still there when you sniff again one hour later. You cannot pick up the box and shake the contents.
The best explanation for your sniffing observations is that the unknown substance is either a
- liquid or a gas, but not a solid.
- liquid or something that readily becomes a liquid.
- solid or a liquid, but not a gas.
- gas or something that readily gives off a gas.
Explain why your choice is the best answer and why the other choices are not.
