Narrative
Cyclohexane, cyclohexene, and cyclohexanol are added to three Petri dishes containing acidic chromate solution. The fourth dish is left as the control. The secondary alcohol cyclohexanol is oxidized to the ketone cyclohexanone as indicated by the formation of the green chromium(III) ion. Alkanes and alkenes do not react under these conditions.
