Electrical Conductivity

  • The ability of a material to conduct electricity is dependent on the band gap energy.

  • If the band gap energy separating the filled valence band from the unfilled conduction band is large, the metal is an insulator.

  • In semiconductors this band gap energy is smaller. As temperature increases, valence band electrons can increasingly be promoted to the conduction band by thermal energy.

  • In metals, the band gap energy is essentially zero.
