Data for elements with the diamond structure in the top table and for compounds with the zinc blende structure in the bottom table. For the elements with the diamond structure, heavier, larger atoms have longer, weaker bonds, corresponding to smaller band gap energies.In the bottom table, note the roughly constant size of the unit cell. Band gap energy increases with increasing difference in electronegativity of the A and Z atoms.
