Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)

  • At the junction between the n-type and p-type semiconductors there is a shift in relative position of the valence and conduction band edges as the Fermi levels in the two regions match up.

  • This promotes current in forward bias and retards current in reverse bias, as shown by the plot of current through the p-n junction versus applied voltage.

  • Electricity is converted into light.
