The process begins with the austenite phase, top center.Upon cooling there is a conversion into the martensite phase shown at the bottom right.Through bending, this martensite phase can be transformed into a variant such as is shown in the bottom left to relieve the stress of the bending.When heated, this variant of the martensite phase can be transformed back into the original austenite phase, thus completing a cycle.
