This figure shows a portion of a double hexagonal structure composed of planes with A, B, and C orientations. Unlike the cubic closest packed structure that contains these planes in the order ..ABCABC.., the double hexagonal structure has an ..ABACABAC.. order. The double hexagonal structure as well as other structures that result from different stacking orders are closest packed. Their atoms have coordination numbers of 12.
