Obtaining a Melting Point

IMAGE. Obeserving both the sample and the temperature during a melting point determination.

The melting point is a characteristic property of a substance. It can be used for sample identification and purity determination. The melting point is observed by slowly heating a sample and observing the temperature when the sample has changed from a solid to a liquid.

A Mel-Temp™, a Thomas Hoover Apparatus™, or a Thiele tube can be used to hold the sample and provide slow, even heating.
