Optical Properties of Metals

  • Partially filled bands allow metals to absorb electromagnetic radiation over a wide range of energies.

  • The excited electrons can then relax and radiate the energy of the incident radiation with very high efficiency, leading to high reflectivity.

  • The non-silver color of copper and gold is due to non-uniform reflectivity over the visible spectrum. The red, orange, and yellow wavelengths are more highly reflected by copper, giving it its characteristic color.
