One application for NiTi memory metal is in the automatic transmission of a diesel-powered Mercedes Benz.A valve comprising a steel spring and a memory metal spring will remain closed until the memory metal warms.This is due to the reduced strength of the memory metal spring in the martensite phase, which allows the steel spring to compress the memory metal spring and close the valve.Upon warming, the memory metal spring acquires the austenite structure and has been trained to open, permitting fluid flow, as shown.
