NiTi memory metal is also used in: eyeglass frames, orthodontic and orthopedic braces, anti-scald valves in plumbing systems, and surgical staples.In eyeglass frames the high temperature, rigid austenite phase is employed.In braces the high tensile strength is employed to hold the teeth or limb in place. Unlike other metals, memory metal retains its tensile strength with time.In anti-scald valves the valve closes if the temperature of the water becomes too hot.In surgical staples body heat causes the transition from the martensite phase to the austenite phase as the staples are applied. The staples curve during this transition to hold the skin tight over the incision. They are painlessly removed by cutting them in the middle.
