The Fluorite Unit Cell | ||
The unit cell of CaF2 (fluorite) is a face centered cubic. Lattice points are located at the corners of the unit cell and in the centers of the faces. Calcium ions are located on the lattice points. Fluoride ions are located in all eight of the tetrahedral holes formed by the calcium ions. Click on the pictures to the right to cycle through different views of the unit cell. ---> The underlined text above links to a definition.

Calcium
fluoride crystallizes with a face centered cubic unit cell.
Fluoride
ions occupy all eight of the tetrahedral holes in the unit cell.
Lattice
points are located on the corners and in the center of the faces of the
unit cell.
Calcium
ions are located on the lattice points at the eight corners of the unit
cell and in the center of each face.
