Models of metals and ionic compounds can be built of spheres because, to a very good approximation, metal atoms and monoatomic ions behave like spheres. (These models of iron and sodium chloride were built of ping pong balls and plastic beads.) In this presentation we will describe how spherical atoms pack and form the structures of metals and ionic compounds. The principle that guides this packing is called Laves' principle. |
Generally,
atoms in metals and ionic compounds behave like spheres.
