3-Dimensional Structures

The three-dimensional structures of metals and ionic solids can be described as stacks of planes of atoms. Two of the common arrangements involve stacks of closest packed planes, planes with a hexagonal array of atoms. These are hexagonal closest-packed structures and cubic closest-packed structures. The other two common arrangements involve stacks of planes with a square array of atoms. These are body-centered cubic structures and simple cubic structures.
