Contents of the Fluorite Unit Cell | |
The fluorite unit cell contains eight anions. Each is completely within the unit cell.
The unit cell contains four cations in a face centered cubic array. These are shared with several other cells.
The fluorite unit cell contains four (4) MX2 formula units. Click the links on the right to illustrate these topics.

Cations are shared among several unit cells.
1/8 of a cation at each corner is located inside the
unit cell.
1/2 of a cation in each face is located inside the unit cell.
1/2 of a cation in each face x 6 faces + 1/8 of a cation at each
corner x 8 corners = 4 cations per cell
