Contents of a NaCl-Type Unit Cell

The NaCl-type unit cell contains four formula units; there are four cations and four anions per unit cell. Cations are located in the center of the unit cell and on the cell edges. Anions are located at the corners of the unit cell and in the centers of the faces. Most of these ions are shared with other unit cells.

Click the links on the right to illustrate these concepts.

The following pages show how to count the number of ions in a NaCl-type unit cell.
This unit cell is defined by the centers of the chloride ions at its corners. Most of the ions shown are shared with other cells.
