ChemEd X Talks with Melissa Hemling about “whiteboarding” in a hybrid or virtual classroom. Students collaborate in small groups on Classkick.com to digitally analyze data, create and modify models, and/or complete practice problems. Melissa will share how she uses the digital whiteboards to gauge student understanding and pinpoint misconceptions like she did pre-COVID. (For those unfamilar with whiteboarding, read Erica Posthuma's article, Whiteboarding Strategies.)
Melissa teaches high school chemistry in Wisconsin. She is an accomplished professional and was honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 2009. You can read about her Journey to National Board Certification on ChemEd X. Melissa is passionate about inquiry, POGIL, Modeling and project-based learning. ChemEd X Talks are 30 minute virtual meetings that consist of a short presentation (5-10 minutes) followed by Q&A and discussion. Teachers are asked to keep their video on, ask questions and participate in the discussion by offering their own ideas and experience with the topic. These live Zoom events are free, but registration is required. Space is limited, so register early.
