A scarlet-red color is imparted to the flame by strontium chloride. The color is brighter red than the lithium flame color.
The animation is highly schematic. It shows a set of energy levels for a hydrogen-like (one-electron) atom or ion. Collisions of an atom with other fast-moving atoms in the flame can raise an atom to an excited state, after which the atom can lose energy by emitting a photon.
At room temperature nickel is ferromagnetic, and a nickel sphere is attracted to a hanging magnet. When the sphere is heated to above 627 K, it is no longer attracted to the magnet, but after cooling it once again becomes ferromagnetic, and jumps up to the hanging magnet.
Vials of a number of compounds (NaCl, MnSO4, FeSO4, CoCl2, NiSO4, ZnSO4, K4Fe(CN)6, [Co(NH3)6]Cl3, [Ni(NH3)6]Cl2, and H2O) are hung from a thread. When a magnet is brought near, some of the vials are attracted.
