To help introduce students to organic nomenclature in a way that clearly summarizes the patterns that exist in the IUPAC system, a series of paper tools were developed. The paper tool in this activity can be used to introduce the IUPAC naming of major classes of organic compounds. These paper tools are easy to print and distribute to every student each semester.
Nomenclature / Units / Symbols
What you are going to read here is the brief story of an attempt by one teacher to "flip" things. You will get the good, the bad and the ugly.
In this Activity, students use their deductive reasoning skills as they identify formulas of unknown elements and compounds modeled by paperclips. Each color of paperclip represents a different element, with linkages between different paperclips in appropriate ratios representing 20 unknowns.
In this Activity, students collect data outdoors on a rainy day using plates and paper towels and use the information to calculate the rate of rainfall. This Activity reinforces ideas about density, mass, volume, area, length, and units.
Organic Nomenclature is a drill-and-practice tutorial on naming simple organic compounds and drawing structures consisting of multiple-choice questions.
